5 Tips For Planning Your First Trip To Europe

Yay, you’re considering taking a trip to Europe! It’s a destination (well, continent) I think everyone should explore at least once in their lives if they have the chance. I, for one, can’t seem to get enough of it and want to go back as often as I can. Planning (or simply anticipating) a trip abroad is so exciting… but also maybe a bit overwhelming.

I’ve worked with plenty of people that come to me and say they want “Europe” but have no idea where to start. Plus, the thought of traveling abroad for the first time ever can be quite nerve-wracking. Here are my top five tips for planning your first trip to Europe.

1. Plan Ahead

Okay, okay, I know, this was an easy tip #1… but it’s true and it’s important! Europe is better when you don’t need to stress over last-minute planning. If you’re traveling during the busy season (June-August), you’ll be competing with both foreigners and locals for availability. It’s better to book the big things, like your flights and hotels, well in advance. You can start planning as early as 12 months in advance but I’d say the sweet spot is around 9-6 months out.

This is where I can help! Let’s start discussing your trip as soon as you’re ready to turn that daydream into a reality.

2. Consider Time Spent *actually* Traveling

I’m not just talking about the flight across the pond here. I’m also talking about your time spent getting to the train station in Rome, amount of time spent on the train to Venice, time spent searching for a water taxi when you arrive in Venice, how early you have to get to the airport to make sure you have time to check your bags, etc. etc.

Europe is great because it is SO well connected. Whether you’re traveling by train, car, or plane, it’s fairly easy to get from point A to point B (in comparison to how spread out the US is). However, it’s VERY important to consider all the time involved with each step of the *actual* travel.

You’re not coming home and telling your friends and family about the fun times you had in the airport security line.

You may be tempted to only look at that short, 45-minute flight time to Munich but keep in mind that it’s actually more like a half-day endeavor. Still, it could be totally worth your time but make sure you factor everything in!

3. Pack Light

As mentioned in tip #2, factoring in the the actual travel is important. This goes hand-in-hand with the luggage your dragging around. Trust me, lugging a 50+ pound suitcase up and down the stairs of a train station is not fun.

I know it’s tempting to think you’ll have 3 outfit changes every day but, let’s be honest, you probably won’t. 😉 Packing light means you will likely do laundry during your trip (plan ahead and make sure your hotel offers laundry service), and you’ll re-wear some of your clothes.

Pack at least 50% comfortable, neutral, laying clothes and prioritize comfortable shoes!

I have a bunch more packing tips so maybe this will be the next blog post topic!

4. Cut Your “Must See” List in Half

No, seriously. It’s very tempting for American’s to pack WAY too much into their European itineraries. I mean, why wouldn’t you? You’re going all the way over there, who knows when you’ll be back, everything is so close, you want to see it all, etc.

Nope, leave that mindset in America. Instead of prioritizing the sheer number of places you’re checking off your list, prioritize the experience you will have in each place.

Lean into the slower-paced European way of travel. Relax, enjoy, savor, wander, and spend time truly getting to know each destination. This could look like spending at least a couple of nights at each stop, finding unique, local activities, and allowing yourself some “unplanned” time in each city.

Rome wasn’t build in a day… why would you think you could see it all in a day?

5. Get Your Tech Prepped

Don’t forget your travel adapter and converter! The UK and Europe operate with different voltage and outlets so you’ll need these little gadgets to charge your electronics. Double check the voltage on those hair tools before you try using them in Europe!

Also, do your research and download any rail or transportation apps that are used in the city you’re visiting. For example, Uber doesn’t operate everywhere in Europe but each city may have their own version of this service. In addition, cities and countries will have their own transportation apps so you can easily access public transport info.

Google Translate, Google Maps, and a currency conversion app are also great to have prepped and ready to use!

Now, get planning! Your first trip to Europe is SO fun and exciting! If you’d like some extra support with planning, I’d love to help make your travel dreams a reality. Click here to begin the trip planning form on my website and get started.
